Khemia Arts Group

Khemia Arts Group is a family experience

Khemia Arts is a beginning. It’s our family vision, and includes music, art, photography and more. A collage of some of ‘our favorite things.’

Our first and greatest love is music! Most times, if we’re not playing it, we’re listening to it. Mostly Jazz—when we’re not listening to R&B, Gospel, World, Blues, Classical …

We believe in acknowledging the pioneers of this Great American Art Form. So thank you, Dizzy, Duke, Billie, Cab, Miles and many, many more. And let’s not forget to give recognition to those art forms that gave birth to jazz—among them the ancient rhythm of work songs that stretched from Africa to America; wailing Southern Blues, and soul-stirring Gospel.

This site is by no means complete! Check back from time to time, because Khemia Arts is a work in progress. There’s always a different project going on. Always something to share. Always something to learn!

As parents of music majors, band members and all that goes with it, we’re enthusiatic supporters of music education. It’s not always about becoming rich or famous, but simply having something of beauty that’s yours to draw upon. As the German novelist Berthold Auerback stated:

“Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.”

We’re blessed to live in California’s Shasta Cascade region. With all the beautiful sights, it’s only natural to draw artistic inspiration to paint, draw, photograph or compose. If you’ve never been to far northern California, (or even if you have!) relax and watch the video below. It features Redding California’s “Sundial Bridge” which stretches across the graceful the Sacramento River. My oldest son Joel (J) composed the accompanying music, and chose the name “Graceful Blue for this composition.”

Come to think of it, listening to the flowing river is music all by itself :)

We hope your experience here will be most enjoyable.
So look around, and share with us your thoughts.

Oh, and don’t forget to visit our new blog “Call and Response.”)

Much peace and many blessings,
—Joel S. Cowell, Sr and family
